Transitioning

It is a summer of transition. Last weekend, I moved out of my apartment and back in with my family for Vermont’s summer months. I am enjoying the lush forests, quiet nights, and the slightly cooler air up on my mom’s hill. It’s a blessing to be out in the country during the time of year when I feel most inspired to get outside, but that’s not why I moved back home. I’m here in preparation for a much bigger move to Atlanta, Georgia. My partner recently began a new job down south, and we’ve made the strangely-adult-feeling choice for me to join him there. There are a few exciting ways that I’ll be spending these last few weeks in Vermont:

Teaching.
I’ll be leading the Young Writers Project’s summer camp in conjunction with Sara Holbrook Community Center & Hunt Middle School in Burlington. I will also be making an appearance at Stowe’s Camp For Me, and I am especially excited to announce my 5-week Spoken Word course for teens at the Writers Barn in Shelburne, VT. Here, we will focus equally on writing and performance while looking at themes of place/environment, self definition, and community. We will meet Friday afternoons from 3pm-5pm on June 21 & 28, July 5, 19 & 26. Registration is $80 for all 5 weeks.
Researching Grad Schools.
While in Georgia, I hope to enroll in a low-residency MFA program for creative writing. These programs allow you to study one-on-one with professional writers from anywhere in the country, naturally folding your writing practice into your daily routine. I am excited for the apprenticeship experience, and I will be taking several trips around New England to visit schools where I’d like to apply. A side benefit of the low-residency model is that it will allow me to visit home a couple times a year in order to attend short, intensive residencies. Interested in Low-Residency programs? I found The Low-Residency MFA Handbook extremely helpful.
Getting Ready for GA.
This is where I need your help. As a freelance teaching artist, performer, CD-hawker, activist, spiritual seeker, and so much more, I rely on a strong community to continue moving forward. I am looking for artists, educators, and activists to help me find work, friends, and fulfillment. Do you have people in the Atlanta area? Connect with me if you do!
Enjoying the Outdoors.
Vermont mountaintops are my friends. They always will be.
